Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend after the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the search of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
