Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
